Custom lanyard pricing: what to expect and where quotes go wrong

June 30, 20265 min readClearQuoter Research

Custom lanyards are a commodity promotional item. Material, width, attachment hardware, and print method drive the price. When quotes vary widely for the same spec, the gap is almost always in markup and fees — not in the lanyard itself.

What goes into a lanyard price

  • Material. Polyester (most common, lowest cost), nylon (softer, slightly higher), woven (the design is woven into the fabric, not printed on it), and eco materials like bamboo or recycled PET. The material sets the base cost per unit.
  • Width. Standard widths are ¾" and 1". Wider lanyards cost more material and more print area. Non-standard widths may trigger custom tooling.
  • Attachment. Swivel hook, bulldog clip, or badge reel. Safety breakaway clasp (required at many corporate events). Each attachment type has a different unit cost, and some vendors include the attachment in the base price while others do not.
  • Print method. Screen print (1–2 colors, lowest cost), dye-sublimation (full-color, full-bleed, slightly higher), and woven (most expensive but most durable — the branding outlasts the lanyard).

Quantity breaks and MOQ traps

Lanyard pricing drops at standard break points — typically 100, 250, 500, and 1,000 units. The per-unit cost at 1,000 can be half the cost at 100. Two common traps:

  • MOQ padding. You need 200 and the vendor quotes 500 at a better per-unit rate. The total is higher, and you are warehousing 300 lanyards.
  • Overseas production sold as the only option. Overseas lanyards are cheaper per unit but ship in 3–4 weeks. Domestic production costs more but ships in days. If your timeline allows ocean freight, overseas is cheaper. If you need them next week, domestic is the only option and costs accordingly.

Where lanyard quotes go wrong

  • Setup charged per color or per side. Setup should be one charge per design, not per color pass or per print side. If both sides show the same logo, that is one design.
  • Attachment as a separate add-on. Some vendors quote the flat strap only and add the hook or clip as an extra line. Compare all-in: strap plus attachment plus safety breakaway.
  • Inflated freight on a lightweight item. Lanyards weigh almost nothing. A freight charge that represents more than 5–10% of the order value on a domestic shipment is worth questioning.
  • Safety breakaway as a premium. Breakaway clasps cost pennies at volume. A large upcharge for a safety feature that is standard at most events is margin, not cost.
