Branded drinkware pricing: tumblers, bottles, and koozies
Branded drinkware is one of the most competitive categories in promotional products. Tumblers, water bottles, and koozies are commodity items sourced from a small number of manufacturers, which means identical products should price closely across vendors. When quotes diverge, the cause is almost always a spec mismatch — generic vs name-brand base, one-color pad print vs full-color wrap — not a legitimate cost difference.
What drives drinkware cost
- Base item. A generic stainless tumbler and a name-brand equivalent can differ by $5–15 per unit. The functionality is similar; the difference is brand licensing and perceived quality. Confirming which base both vendors are quoting is the first step to a valid comparison.
- Decoration method. Pad print (one or two colors, lowest cost), laser engraving (permanent, mid-range cost, limited to metallic surfaces), and full-color wrap (highest cost, suited to complex artwork). Each method has different setup economics and per-unit pricing.
- Quantity. Drinkware has steep quantity breaks. The per-unit cost at 250 is noticeably lower than at 48. Check whether your order can hit the next break without over-buying.
- Packaging. Bulk pack (cheapest), individual poly bag, or gift box. Individual packaging adds $0.50–2.00 per unit depending on the presentation level.
Where drinkware quotes pad
- Brand-name swap. A vendor quotes a name-brand tumbler where a generic was specified, or vice versa. The per-unit cost shifts and the swap may not be disclosed unless you compare spec sheets.
- Per-color decoration billing. Pad print setup is per color. A two-color logo costs more than one color. If the quote says “imprint included” without specifying colors, confirm whether your artwork fits.
- Setup on reorders. Setup charges are legitimate on a first run. Reordering the same art on the same item should not trigger a new setup fee.
- Freight offset. A low per-unit price offset by inflated shipping is a common pattern. Drinkware is heavy — freight is a real cost, but it should be at carrier rates, not a profit center.
